“Biodiversity Week to Celebrate Wicklow’s Rich Natural Heritage” – Matthews

Green TD Steven Matthews has encouraged Wicklow residents to attend the wide range of events across Wicklow for National Biodiversity Week, which takes place between May 17th and 26th. These include a whale watching event on Bray Head, a guided biodiversity walk in Blessington and a nocturnal bat walk in Rathnew. More information on events taking place in Wicklow can be found on the National Biodiversity Week website. Speaking before the week began, Deputy Matthews said:

“This year’s National Biodiversity Week promises to be one of the best-ever with a jammed packed schedule of events and interactive experiences planned around Wicklow. There are a range of family-friendly events which invite people of all ages to learn more about the rich natural heritage that we have here in Wicklow. I would encourage everyone to get involved in these events next week.

“National Biodiversity Week draws attention to the biodiversity crisis that we are facing both globally and in Ireland, where 1 in 3 native Irish bees are threatened by extinction. Protection of the natural environment is a key priority of the Green Party in Government. We have increased funding for the National Parks and Wildlife Service, allocated funding for the appointment of Biodiversity Officers in local authorities across the country and delivered a National Biodiversity Action Plan.

“It is incredibly important that we continue to raise awareness of the need to protect and restore our natural habitats through events such as National Biodiversity Week. I’m looking forward to attending several events in Wicklow next week and I hope to meet as many local residents as possible getting the chance to see the amazing biodiversity on their doorsteps”, Deputy Matthews concluded.
