Green TD Steven Matthews has confirmed the renewal of the First 5 - My Little Library Initiative for another year. This project, which is supported and provided for by Green Party Minister Roderic O’ Gorman, will once again supply free books for children in Wicklow who will be starting school this September. The books, provided through local libraries, are available through English or Irish and are targeted at this age group.
Speaking about the renewal of the initiative, Deputy Matthews said:
“I warmly welcome the confirmation of the renewal of the My Little Library Initiative. All Children in Wicklow starting primary school in September this year are entitled to a free bag of books, available in English or Irish. Each book bag contains three books on starting school, making friends and developing self-confidence, a story card on visiting the library, a postcard the child can write or draw on and give to their new teacher, a special library card and a ‘My Little Library’ cardholder.
“We in Wicklow are so fortunate to have access to a wonderful library service with over 13 libraries around the county. These libraries play a vital role in a child’s development and provide an invaluable service to communities across Wicklow. There also exists mobile library services which service many rural communities in Wicklow to ensure that no child or adult misses out on the benefits of our library services.
“I would encourage all parents with children starting school this September to pop into their local library over the summer to collect their bag and join the library for a lifetime of stories and reading. This initiative will help children in the transition to primary school and promote a lifelong love of learning. A special thank you must also go to all the wonderful staff in our Wicklow libraries for their help in rolling out this initiative.”, concluded Deputy Matthews.
